Gold and energy shares pulled Toronto stocks down in afternoon trading Tuesday, as gold prices tumbled.

The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 43.54 points, or 0.33%, at 13,087.38.

Seven of the 10 main TSX groups made gains.

The materials group fell 2.05%.

Teck Cominco Ltd. shares dropped $1.67, or 4.83%, to close at $32.88, after it announced profit was down to $280 million in Q4, compared with a profit of $866 million a year ago.

The gold sub-index dropped 3.76%.

Eldorado Gold Corp. was a heavy trader (10,486,429 shares) in this category, falling 28¢, or 4.63%, to end at $5.77.

As well, Kinross Gold Corp. shares lost $1.18, or 5.15%, to $21.75. Barrick Gold Corp. fell $1.89, or 3.77%, to $48.20.

Gold for April delivery declined US$15.60 at US$911.10 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The energy group moved down 0.51% as the March crude contract fell 81¢, or 0.9%, to close at US$92.78 a barrel on the Nymex.

Shares in Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. rose 23¢, or 0.37%, to $62.99, after the company announced that its Horizon oilsands project cost be nearly $2 billion over budget.

The financials sector remained relatively flat, ending up 0.15%.

In individual stocks, Molson Coors Brewing Co. shares closed up $4.60, or 10.18%, at $49.78 on the TSX, after it reported Q4 profit was up to US$173 million from US$99 million a year earlier.

Home Capital Group Inc. today reported an 18% increase in profit for the fourth quarter. Its shares closed up $1.53, or 4.03%, at $39.46.

The Canadian dollar closed out at US$99.90, up 0.05 of a cent from yesterday’s close.

The junior S&P/TSX Venture composite index ended the session down 4.74 points, or 0.19%, at 2,536.79.

In New York, U.S. stocks rallied in the afternoon, after billionaire Warren Buffett announced his Berkshire Hathaway’s offer to reinsure up to US$800 billion in municipal bonds.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 133.40 points, or 1.09%, at 12,373.41.

The S&P 500 rose 9.73 points, or 0.73%, to 1,348.86.

But the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index slipped 0.02 points at 2,320.04.
