Trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange today surpassed $1 trillion for the year. That’s the first time trading value has ever reached that level.
Trading value surpassed the $1 trillion mark at approximately 10:00 ET.
The year’s trading value record fell on November 21 when the previous year record of $944.2 billion, set in 2000, was eclipsed. TSX trading value so far in 2005 is running approximately 29% ahead of last year.
“This record is just the next step in an expanding acceptance of our market model around the world,” said Richard Nesbitt, CEO of TSX Group, operator of Toronto Stock Exchange. “We are the global leader in mining listings, we list more energy companies than any other exchange around the world and we have been leaders and innovators in structured products and exchange-traded funds. Our market has seen the third highest amount of money raised by issuers of any of the world’s exchanges in 2005. Canada is obviously a market the world is watching.”
In addition to the trading value record,
TSX has also seen 50 million trades on the market — the most ever for a year.
Trading volume is at 59.2 billion shares — just below the record of 61.2 billion shares, set in 2004.
