Effective Tuesday, there are new stock symbol designation codes for certain non-convertible note securities that trade on Toronto Stock Exchange.

This is the first part of a project aimed at bringing additional clarity to the differences between various types of securities that trade on Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange.

“The benefits to investors will come from the greater transparency to the market resulting from having clear and consistently applied stock symbol formats reflecting the voting attributes of the securities while eliminating the inconsistencies between the labelling of share classes,” said Robert Fabes, senior vp, Toronto Stock Exchange, in a news release.

A number of stock symbols for certain securities are being modified to include additional two-character identifiers.

In April 2004, Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) announced the changes following consultation with the various stakeholder communities. Tuesday’s change involves the addition of the new trading symbol extension “.NT” to designate each affected security as a note security.

For example the new security symbol AAP notes is AAP.NT

“We have communicated changes to issuers, brokers, traders and, of course, the investing public to ensure everyone understands how these changes will impact how they see their stocks displayed on screens and in the newspapers,” added. Fabes.

Future changes this fall will include new symbol extensions for securities that have non-conventional voting structures, such as non-voting, multiple voting and subordinate voting shares, on both TSX and TSX Venture Exchange.
