The Martin-Manley shuffle has put the Canadian dollar in the spotlight and NFO WorldGroup, a leading provider of internet-based research has decided its timely to release a survey on adoption of the American dollar in North America.
Despite suggestion from some economists that adoption of the greenback might an advantage for Canada, the survey found that two-thirds of Americans do not want share with Canadians. An overwhelming 84% reject the idea of the U.S., Canada and Mexico creating a common North American currency, says NFO.
Over 2,500 Americans and 3,200 Canadians participated in the survey. According to NFO, “the viewpoint is far different in Canada, where, one third of respondents indicated that they would consider adopting the U.S. dollar and 34% are open to a new common currency for North America. Overall, more than half of Canadians are prepared to accept at least one of the three options presented, with only 43% being unprepared to accept any change in their currency.”
NFO points to the Europe’s wide-scale adoption of the Euro and the Canadian dollar’s historic lows, earlier this year, as fuelling discussion in Canada around dollarization and a common North American currency. “If the Canadian dollar continues to gain strength, then Canadians’ views may very well change in the future,” says David Stark, NFO CF group public affairs director.
