Technology and gold stocks moderated market gains Friday, as the price of gold dipped after hitting a record high on Thursday.

The S&P/TSX Composite index closed up 76.36 points, or 0.56%, to end the day at 13,585.91.

Seven of the 10 major TSX groups dropped.

The materials group fell 0.24%, while the gold sub-index shed 0.56%.

Gold for April delivery dropped US$1.40 to end at US$947.80 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Kinross Gold Corp. shares fell 47¢, or 1.97%, to end at $23.37, after it announced a rise in Q4 profit to US$173.1 million, from US$41 million a year ago.

The information tech group slipped 0.08%, even as shares in Research in Motion rallied late in the day to close up $1.27, or 1.18%, at $109.27.

The heavyweight energy index gained 0.98%, as crude for April delivery rose 58¢, or 0.6%, to close at US$98.81 a barrel on the Nymex. For the week, crude gained US$3.31 and finished above US$100-per-barrel on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

The influential financials group gained 1.03%. Canadian banks begin reporting their first-quarter results on Wednesday.

Royal Bank of Canada shares gained 11¢, or 0.22%, to end at $50.50, one day after it announced it would acquire Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management Ltd. for 27 million shares currently worth $1.36 billion.

CIBC shares gained $1.86, or 2.83%, to end at $67.61.

Among individual stocks, CHC Helicopter Corp. shares gained $8.37, or 38.25%, to finish at $30.25, after it announced U.S.-based First Reserve Corp. will acquire it in a deal valued at $3.7 billion.

Meanwhile, shares in Rogers Communications Inc. gained just 19¢, or 0.49%, to close at $39.19, despite it’s reporting a 44% increase in Q4 profit, to $254 million.

Shares in Bombardier Inc. shares lost 10¢, or 1.75%, to finish at $5.62, after it said it authorized sales proposals for its CSeries aircraft.

The junior S&P/TSX Venture composite index retreated 3.66 points, or 0.14%, to close at 2,657.15.

The Canadian dollar closed out at US$98.81, down 0.07 of a cent.

In New York, markets recovered from a day of losses with a quick afternoon rally.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 96.72 points, or 0.79%, to end the session at 12,381.02.

The S&P 500 closed up 10.58 points, or 0.79%, at 1,353.11.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 3.57 points, or 0.16%, to finish at 2,303.35.

For the week, the Dow finished up 0.27% and the S&P 500 gained 0.23%, but the Nasdaq declined 0.79%.
