The Chicago Board of Trade announced that it enjoyed its highest daily trading volume in its 158-year history on Tuesday.

Total exchange volume was 6,522,607 contracts, surpassing the previous all-time record of 6,003,976 contracts set on Nov. 29, 2005. Yesterday’s total was only the second time total CBOT volume topped six million contracts.

The exchange also reached a new high-mark for electronic trading volume on e-cbot, which climbed to 4,946,515 contracts. The previous record, 4,451,291 contracts, was set on May 31. It set numerous electronic trading records en route to yesterday’s total electronic volume milestone.

New electronic trading records include new highs for total electronic futures trading volume, total electronic financial futures and options trading volume, 10-year Treasury note futures topped the two million mark in daily electronic volume for the first time, and five-year Treasury note futures set a daily electronic record.

In addition to the new electronic trading records, the exchange also set two combined volume records. The CBOT set a record for total combined futures volume, with 6,008,850 contracts traded on Tuesday. Five-year Treasury note futures also added a combined volume record to the electronic volume record set yesterday.

“Highly liquid markets, unparalleled access to a broad range of trading opportunities and a premier electronic trading environment at the CBOT were all critical to the exchange achieving the best day in its history,” said CBOT president and CEO Bernard Dan. “These records are a testament to our market participants’ high level of confidence in both the exchange’s electronic trading platform, e-cbot, and in our open auction markets.”
