Canadian stock markets will open at 9:30 ET. on Wednesday, September 11 following a brief remembrance ceremony in Stock Market Place in Toronto.

The planned ceremony will include welcoming remarks from TSX Group CEO Barbara Stymiest, 10 minutes to read the names of 25 Canadians reported dead following last years’ terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, and a moment of silence at 8:46 ET.

Many of those killed in the attacks were employed in the financial sector.

A spokesperson for the TSX Group said senior management made the decision to open markets on time at 9:30, rather than join U.S. markets and delay opening until 11:00 ET.

At the TSX, all trading fees collected by the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. will be donated to the September 11th Disaster Relief Fund. The TSX Group donated US$50,000 to
that fund last September.

The Investment Dealers Association and its Capital Markets Committee too recommended that Canadian fixed income markets observe a moment of silence at 8:46, but that markets remain open for normal business trading activity.

In the United States, stock exchanges including the AMEX, Nasdaq and the NYSE have announced they will delay opening until 11:00 ET on Wednesday to respect memorial services planned that day in New York and Washington.

In a press release, NYSE chairman and CEO Dick Grasso said “it’s fitting and appropriate that the New York Stock Exchange remains silent during the memorial services.”

The TSX Group ceremony is expected to commence at 8:30 a.m. in Stock Market Place, The Exchange Tower, located at 130 King Street West, Toronto.
