The Nova Scotia Securities Commission Tuesday announced the appointment of a new director of enforcement.

Randy Gass is a former Crown counsel with Alberta Justice in the Specialized Prosecution Branch for Economic Crime.

While there, he prosecuted major economic crime files including Ponzi schemes, mortgage, motor vehicle, identity theft and credit card fraud. Many of his cases were in conjunction with security-related investigations which gave him extensive experience in securities law prosecutions.

Prior to his position with Alberta Justice, Gass worked as Crown counsel with Public Prosecution Services of Canada where he received extensive experience in tax fraud. He also developed an expertise in electronic trial preparation and presentation technologies. He designed an electronic disclosure guide, eDisclosure, which he used to train various federal and provincial law enforcement agencies.

Before moving to Alberta, Gass was managing partner in his own law firm in Toronto for more than 10 years. He practised administrative, criminal, commercial and civil law. Gass received his law degree from the University of Windsor 1988. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1990 and then to the bars of Nova Scotia and Alberta.
