Heather Munroe-Blum has been appointed to the board of directors of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), federal finance minister Jim Flaherty announced Thursday.

The CPPIB is responsible for prudently investing Canada Pension Plan investment funds in a diversified portfolio of assets to serve the best interests of CPP contributors and beneficiaries.

Munroe-Blum will be filling the director position which was left vacant following the unfortunate passing of Germaine Gibara on April 21, 2010.

The principal and vice chancellor of McGill University, Munroe-Blum brings to the board extensive academic, financial, communications and stakeholder mediation experience. She will begin her work with the CPPIB with the completion of Gibara’s directorship, which was originally scheduled to conclude on Oct. 26, 2011.
