J.P. Morgan has established an energy investment banking business in Calgary, the company announced Monday.

The firm said that its investment banking business hired David Harrison as head of Canadian energy investment banking, to build out its energy franchise in Canada. He will report to Adam Howard, senior country officer and head of Canadian investment banking, and Vean Gregg, head of North American oil and gas investment banking.

Harrison was previously head of energy investment banking at UBS Securities Canada, where he worked since 1995.

“David brings tremendous experience, relationships and knowledge advising the top natural resources companies in Canada,” said Howard. “This addition to the investment banking team underscores the firm’s commitment to providing our clients with world class service and building our Canadian platform.”

J.P. Morgan noted that it continues to expand in natural resources sectors with the acquisition of select assets of RBS Sempra Commodities earlier this year, and the acquisition of UBS Commodities Canada Ltd. last year. The firm also recently hired Geoff Cohen as an executive director covering Canadian metals and mining investment banking.
