Each week, we summarize notable moves across the financial industry.
- Harry Culham has been named incoming president and CEO of CIBC, succeeding Victor Dodig, who is retiring on Oct. 31, after a decade at the helm. Culham, who is currently senior executive vice-president and head of capital markets and direct financial services, will also take the reins as COO effective April 1. He joined the bank in 2008, bringing senior-level experience in banking roles in Europe and Asia. After he steps down, Dodig will remain a special advisor to the board and to Culham until April 30, 2026. Dodig has been with CIBC for two decades and previously held senior roles with UBS and Merrill Lynch.
- Garry R. McCulloch has joined Viewpoint Investment Partners to establish a new division, Viewpoint Private Wealth. McCulloch comes to Viewpoint from Richardson Wealth, where he was a portfolio manager for 13 years. Before that, he held the same role at Goodman & Co. Investment Counsel for a decade. His team, including Brenden Solely, will join him. Solely brings 11 years of experience at Richardson Wealth, including seven as a portfolio manager, and has been named a partner. Mat Sawin, a portfolio manager at Viewpoint with more than 15 years of experience, has also been named a partner. Through the move, the firm aims to expand Viewpoint’s pooled fund and institutional offerings to high net worth clients.
- Andrew Auerbach, former head of BMO Private Wealth (Canada) who co-founded investment counselling firm Delisle Advisory group last year, will be group executive, business and private banking, with National Australia Bank in Melbourne, effective June 16. Delisle co-founder Jean Blacklock, who is married to Auerbach, will also go to Australia. Sandra Henderson, Delisle’s chief operating officer, will transition to CEO, and will be looking to partner with a chief investment officer or portfolio manager for the boutique firm, she said in an interview on Monday.
- Steve Finch has been appointed president and CEO of Manulife Asia, effective May 9. Finch will succeed Phil Witherington, who is set to take over as Manulife president and CEO the same day. Finch has been Manulife’s chief actuary since 2016. He’s also executive VP and CFO of the company’s U.S. life insurance business (John Hancock Financial Services), where he has spent over 20 years.
- Andrea Hazlewood has joined Wellington-Altus as senior vice-president, national administration & advisor onboarding. Hazelwood, who will report to COO-CFO Dennis Stewner, has more than 16 years of experience with Richardson Wealth, most recently as VP, advisor experience and growth.
- Macky Tall has been appointed chair of the Canada Infrastructure Bank’s board for a four-year term. Tall is a senior advisor with Carlyle Group and a seasoned infrastructure investment specialist. He was previously head of real assets and private equity with Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) for 15 years before being appointed president and CEO of CDPQ Infra, a position he held for five years. Tall replaces interim chair Jane Bird.
