Each week, Investment Executive summarizes notable moves across the financial industry.

  • Ghislain Parent, executive vice-president, international, will retire from National Bank of Canada on Oct. 1. Parent, who worked for 13 years at the bank and spent more than three decades in the financial services industry, will be succeeded by Stéphane Achard, currently EVP and co-head for commercial and private banking. However, oversight of specialty finance company Credigy (a subsidiary of the Atlanta-based bank based that Parent oversaw) has once again been placed under the financial markets group that’s led by Étienne Dubuc. The last part of the shift is Michael Denham, currently vice-chairman of commercial banking and financial markets has been appointed EVP and head of commercial and private banking, effective June 1. Denham, who joined the bank in fall 2021, was president and CEO of Business Development Bank of Canada for nearly six years before joining National Bank of Canada.
  • Matt Berman was named president of Foresters Financial U.S. and Canada on March 1. He has worked for the company for six years in various roles, most recently as president of Foresters Financial U.S. A release from the company noted that he has more than 25 years of experience with strategic planning, sales and product management across the insurance space.
  • Barbados-based Sagicor Financial Company Ltd., which is buying Toronto-based life insurer Ivari, announced two Canadian-based appointments this week: Kathryn Jenkins is group chief financial officer, while George Sipsis has been promoted to EVP, corporate development and capital markets. Jenkins was most recently CFO of the Investment Management Corporation of Ontario, but also has held senior roles at the CPP Investments and two of Canada’s Big Six banks throughout her decades-long career. Sipsis joined Sagicor in 2021, coming from Scotiabank’s investment banking division at that time.
