Empire Life Investments Inc. on Monday announced the appointment of Ian Hardacre as chief investment officer (CIO). He also joins the executive leadership team of Kingston, Ont.-based Empire Life Insurance Co., the parent company of Empire Life Investments.

Hardacre will continue to manage the Canadian equity and dividend fund portfolios for the company’s mutual funds and guaranteed investment funds, and to co-manage its asset allocation GIF, in addition to his new executive responsibilities.

Hardacre joined Empire Life Investments in May as senior portfolio manager, Canadian equities.

Most recently, he was head of Canadian equities and a long-time fund manager for Invesco Canada Ltd. Before that, he was a portfolio manager with Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.

Gaelen Morphet, Empire Life Investment’s previous CIO, left the firm in August to become CIO at Sentry Investments, replacing Sandy McIntyre.

“Ian is really looking forward to providing leadership to the team and working closely with our distribution partners,” said Mark Sylvia, president and CEO of Empire Life Investments, in a statement.

“With Ian’s leadership and our team’s disciplined approach to value investing, we are well-positioned to continue to deliver the strong investment performance and downside protection our customers expect.”
