Les Herr, president and CEO of The Empire Life Insurance Company, has been appointed chairman of the board of directors of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA).

At CLHIA’s annual general meeting, held last week in Toronto, Herr was elected to a one-year term as chairman, effective immediately.

“This is a very interesting and challenging time to be chairman,” said Herr. “Our industry is going through a lot of change and is participating in many of the big issues facing Canadians right now, including pension and health care reform.”

Herr has been president and CEO at Empire Life since April 2008. In addition to his active involvement with the CLHIA over the past two years, including serving as chair of the CLHIA standing committees on market conduct and government relations, he is a member of the LIMRA/LOMA Global Board of Directors, and a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives.

Herr is also an active community supporter. He led the 2011 Kingston Frontenac Lennox & Addington United Way campaign to surpass its highest ever fundraising goal. This year, he is leading the campaigns for both Pathways to Education Canada – Kingston and the Thousand Islands Foundation for the Performing Arts.
