Investment industry veteran John MacNaughton is to be buried today. He died at home on February 15.
A father of two and grandfather of three, MacNaughton spent 31 years at brokerage firm, Fry and Company and its successors, ultimately serving as president and CEO of Burns Fry from 1989-1994, and president of Nesbitt Burns from 1994-1999.
MacNaughton was also the founding president and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) starting in 1999, until he left in 2005. He was later chairman of the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and a director of TransCanada Corp.
Additionally, MacNaughton served as chairman CNSX Markets Inc; did a stint as chairman of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada (IDA); and was founding chairman, BMO Financial Group’s Retirement Advisory Council. He was also part of the Crawford Panel, which developed a proposal for the creation of a single Canadian securities regulator in 2006.
Outside the financial industry, MacNaughton served variously as chairman of the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, chairman of the Canadian Institute of International Affairs, a trustee of the University Health Network, a member of the Prime Minister’s Advisory Committee on the Public Service; vice chairman, the Canadian International Council; president of the Empire Club of Canada; and, as a trustee of Rosedale United Church.
MacNaughton was awarded the Order of Canada in 2004 for his “outstanding leadership in the financial services industry as well as in the voluntary and public sectors.” He was also awarded Huron College’s Medal of Distinction, named a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors and received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal.
