The chief investment strategist of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board is leaving to take a job at Toronto-based hedge fund manager Alignvest Management Corp.
Donald Raymond, who joined CPPIB in 2001, has resigned from his position effective March 31, the board said Wednesday.
He will become a managing partner and chief investment officer at Alignvest, effective April 1.
Raymond was responsible for overall investment strategy at CPPIB and headed the investment planning committee.
Prior to joining the CPPIB in 2001, Raymond was a portfolio manager in the Quantitative Strategies group at Goldman Sachs Asset Management in New York, which managed one of the world’s largest hedge funds at the time.
He began his investment career as a research analyst in the fixed-income derivatives department of Burns Fry, a predecessor of BMO Capital Markets.
He holds a PhD in engineering from Queen’s University and a CFA charter.
Raymond is currently chairman of the International Centre for Pension Management and Adjunct Professor of Finance at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. He is also vice chairman of the board of trustees of Queen’s University and chairman of its investment committee.
CPPIB, one of the world’s largest pension funds, invests money not needed by the Canada Pension Plan to pay benefits.
