The C.D. Howe Institute has added Montreal academic Jean Boivin to its Monetary Policy Council.

Boivin is an associate professor in the department of economics at HEC Montréal. Boivin received his B.Sc. from the University of Montréal and his MA and PhD from Princeton University, New Jersey, where he was a student of Professor Mark Watson and co-author with US Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke.

“We are delighted to welcome Jean Boivin to the Council,” said William Robson, president and chief executive officer at the C.D. Howe Institute. “He is a rapidly rising star in the field, with intimate knowledge of US and Canadian monetary policy and central banking. His advice on the Bank of Canada’s interest rate setting will command serious attention.”

By convening to discuss the Bank of Canada’s target for the overnight rate shortly before each of the Bank’s interest-rate announcements, the Council provides a regular, independent assessment of the Bank’s stance as it seeks to achieve its 2% inflation target.
