Michael Katchen, founder of Toronto-based robo-advisor Wealthsimple Financial Inc., was lauded as entrepreneur of the year for 2016 at the Canadian Startup Awards.
Tech media company Techvibes named the winners of the sixth annual Canadian startup awards at a ceremony in Toronto on Thursday night.
From the financial sector, Katchen was lauded as entrepreneur of the year; Montréal-based Real Ventures was named as the top venture capital firm; and Toronto’s Goldmoney Inc., a firm that makes it easier to hold and trade in physical gold, was acknowledged for the best technology innovation or product.

Additionally, Bank of Nova Scotia was recognized as the best big company undergoing a digital transformation, and Harley Finkelstein, COO of Ottawa-based Shopify, was named angel investor of the year.
The startup of the year was Toronto-based education platform Top Hat.
