Wealth management executive David Star has founded Pier 21 Asset Management Inc., an independent institutional asset management firm specializing in international asset classes.

Pier 21 is dedicated to providing international access and choice to Canadian institutional investors, and has secured exclusive investment management relationships with a variety of proven and complimentary international asset managers from around the world.

As president and CEO, Star will provide overall direction for the firm’s growth and development as well as for its exclusive sub-advisory agreements with various international investment managers.

Prior to founding Pier 21 in 2005, Star held a variety of roles in the investment management industry. He was recently a first vp at CIBC (formerly TAL) Global Asset Management, where he held various senior positions including associate chief investment officer (TAL Fund Management), and head of products and marketing for the institutional, retail and high net worth business lines.

Previously, Star was a vp for John Hancock’s Canadian subsidiary, where he was responsible for the firm’s wealth management business. He has 20 years of senior management experience in the Canadian financial marketplace.
