Surprising results of a new survey show that 81% of Canadians who describe themselves as financially knowledgeable and engaged have a high level of confidence in their portfolio strategies and are not panicked by the financial meltdown.

The survey, conducted by the Financial Forum & Wealth Management Expo, finds the financially well versed are not only calm, but see an abundance of opportunity in the markets’ current instability. In fact, 70% of respondents said the current market conditions have presented good buying opportunities.

“What we’re seeing is that those armed with the knowledge they need to take control of their personal finances are reacting with relative ease to the current market conditions, because they feel they have the tools to make the most of the situation,” said Harry Apostolatos, Financial Forum event director, in a statement. “They can distill through the noise and as such keep a reasonable perspective on shifting dynamics.”

Of the 815 Canadians polled in early October, 65% said they remain calm when markets are volatile, knowing that the markets will bounce back eventually. Only one quarter said they felt a lack of control over their investments despite the unpredictability of the markets.

“What it comes down to is that those who feel they understand what’s happening and can make personal, educated choices about how to manage their investments tend not to feel panicked,” said Apostolatos. “It goes back to the concept of ‘knowledge is power’ and almost all respondents agreed that principle is just as relevant when it comes to money matters.”

But the savvy investors surveyed haven’t ignored the market turmoil. As a result of the economic environment, 63% are investing differently and 45% are saving differently than they have in the past.

Still, a greater comprehension of how investments work puts these investors’ minds at ease more so than market stability: 44% said understanding their investments gives them the greatest sense of control over their investments, while 26% cited stable markets.

“We’ve found that when investors are equipped with access to the right information, they gain and remain in control,” said Evelyn Jacks, founder and president of the Knowledge Bureau, which educates professionals in tax and financial services.

Apostolatos encourages advisors and investors to attend the Financial Forum & Wealth Management Expo, taking place in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary early next year. The events will include seminars, workshops and courses on financial planning.
