CBC’s Barbara Frum Atrium in Toronto was filled with the sounds of tiles hitting Scrabble boards Tuesday night at Frontier College’s 2007 Scrabble Night in Canada Corporate Challenge, presented by TSX Group.
Thirty-nine teams from the financial and professional industries donned team jerseys for three exciting periods of Scrabble in support of Frontier College’s literacy programs.
Richard Nesbitt, CEO of TSX Group, welcomed participants and helped to kick off the evening. “This is an innovative and exciting event that raises money for a great cause,” said Nesbitt. “Literacy is such an integral part of everyone’s lives and TSX Group is thrilled to support Frontier College through this event.”
The evening’s challenge raised $215,000 as participants heard Measha Brueggergosman sing “O Canada”, enjoyed some fierce Scrabble competition and munched on hot dogs, chocolate hockey pucks and caramel corn.
In the end, the two-time TSX Cup champions, the Scotiabank Nerdiques, were defeated by CNW Group’s Newsmakers.
Conference winners were Miller Thomson LLP (Legal), Scotiabank Nerdiques (Banking), CNW Group (Accounting & Data Services), Measha Brueggergosman’s team (Diversified) and Scotia Capital (Capital Markets & Wealth Management).
The money raised from Frontier College’s Scrabble Night in Canada Corporate Challenge will help Frontier College improve the literacy skills of youth and adults, allowing them to compete for jobs and improve their lives.
