The federal Competition Bureau launched a public consultation today seeking input on sectors where it should be working to bolster competition.
The Bureau announced today that it is looking for feedback to help it decide on industries where it could play a targeted role in advocating for increased competition.
“Greater competition generally leads to lower prices for consumers, as well as increased choice and innovation,” it notes. As a result, the Bureau says that it is looking for areas where it can advocate in favour of increased competition, and have a positive impact on the economy.
Additionally, it says that it will be “incrementally increasing its level of strategic and targeted regulatory interventions”; which will see it advocate that regulators and policymakers “regulate only where necessary and that they rely on market forces as much as possible to achieve the benefits of competition.”
Where market forces are not considered sufficient, the Bureau says it will provide advice to regulators to help ensure policies are implemented in a way that achieves their objectives in a minimally intrusive way.
The consultation period is open until November 8.
