The Chubb Group of Insurance Cos. is offering a new type of coverage to its homeowner’s policy to help defray expenses from home invasion, child abduction, car jacking and stalking.
The company says these relatively new crimes are on the rise in major Canadian cities such as Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal.
Property crime is now higher in Canada than the U.S. with Canada reporting 30% more break-ins and vehicle thefts than the U.S. (per capita), according to Statistics Canada. These crimes were higher in western Canadian cities such as Victoria and Vancouver than eastern ones such as Toronto and Ottawa.
For $95 per year in Ontario and $110 per year in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec, for Chubb Masterpiece homeowner’s policy holders, Masterpiece Family Protection entitles Chubb customers to coverage for expenses related to home invasion such as security upgrades and treating trauma, for costs resulting from child abduction, and expenses related to bodily injury, trauma, lost wages, insurance deductibles and rewards for car jacking, and for expenses to cover security measures related to stalking cases.
