The Bank of Canada revealed the new $5 and $10 polymer bank notes in Ottawa on Tuesday.

The new bank notes have the same security features as the $20, $50 and $100 notes currently in circulation, said the BoC in a statement, including a combination of transparency and holography.

Commander Chris Hadfield, an astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency, revealed the new $5 bill from the International Space Station via satellite. The new bill features the Canadarm2 and Dextre, robotic devices used to build and maintain the space station. A portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, prime minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911, is also printed on the new bill.

The $10 bill was unveiled by Paul Smith, chairman of the board for Via Rail Canada and features a train travelling through the Rocky Mountains. The image is meant to symbolize Canada’s engineering feat in linking the east and west coasts by rail. The bank note also has a portrait of Sir John A. Macdonald who was prime minister at the time of the railway’s completion.

The BoC said the new bank notes will be placed into circulation in November 2013.
