Toronto Police have issued a warning about fraudsters pretending to represent the Canada Revenue Agency to seek personal information.
On Thursday, the police warned the public of fraudulent requests for personal information, purportedly from the CRA, regarding tax refunds. . Such scams are known as phishing.
The requests are reported to be originating in foreign countries including Russia and Romania, they said.
It has been reported the existence of letters or email purporting to be from the CRA requesting personal information, banking information and passport information in writing, fax or email,
“The letter or email is not from the Canada Revenue Agency. Information should not be provided to the sender,” Toronto Police said, adding that the CRA has well-established practices to protect the confidentiality of taxpayers’ information.
