The Investment Dealers Association of Canada announced that it will host a Web cast addressing issues surrounding divorce and client accounts.
The IDA indicates that its next Web cast on divorce/account matters has been designed to assist firms with the task of due diligence, ensuring adherence to privacy rules, and best practice considerations. The Web cast will cover advisor responsibilities and legal obligations, the access and division of the account (both joint and single), and disclosure and documentation issues.
“The divorce and separation of clients can present trying circumstances for all parties involved including the branch and the advisor,” it notes. “Handling account matters between separating and divorcing clients raises a number of issues which require clear direction and policies in order to safeguard each party involved.”
Arthur Fish, partner and director with Borden Ladner Gervais law firm in Toronto, will be addressing client account-related matters surrounding divorce. Fish’s colleague Virginia Chan, a partner with BLG in Montreal, will support the French Web cast.
The Web cast will take place on June 12 at 4 p.m. EDT in English and June 13 at 4 p.m. EDT in French. A replay of the Web cast will also be made available. The Web cast will be 45 minutes in length and participants will be eligible for one hour of Continuing Education credit, which can be applied against fulfilling their compliance requirement.
