The Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) is warning consumers about an advance fee scam that’s being perpetrated through the mail using the identity of insurance firm, Aviva Canada.
FSCO has posted a warning on its website about a possible advance fee fraud. It reports that letters are currently circulating that are designed to look like they have come from a law firm in Spain promising of a large payout from an estate. “Consumers should note that this type of scenario is commonly involved in an advance fee fraud,” it warns.
The regulator says that the scam is using Aviva Canada’s logo, address and name. “Aviva Canada has confirmed that it has no connection to this proposed transaction or any transactions that are similar,” it notes.
It advises anyone who has received one of these letters to contact Aviva’s ombudsman.
