A former stockbroker, John Doyle from Hâvre-St-Pierre, pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges before the Court of Quebec. He was fined $86,720, which represents 70% of the tax he tried to evade.
A Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) investigation revealed that Doyle had tried to evade $123,886 in taxes by failing to report $498,500 of income for tax years 1998 to 2000. This income came from cheques payable to his clients that he fraudulently cashed. As well, Doyle forged and used false documents to misappropriate funds from his clients, then deposited them in his personal bank account.
In addition to the fine imposed by the court, Doyle has to pay the full amount of taxes owing, all related interest and any civil penalties that apply.
Doyle worked as a stockbroker beginning in 1992 until the Montreal Stock Exchange revoked his licence in 2001 for misappropriating funds.
