Canada’s federal banking regulator has appointed an acting superintendent, while it continues a search for a replacement for its outgoing chief.

The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions reports that Julie Dickson has been tapped to serve as acting superintendent, since Nick Le Pan retired as the superintendent, effective October 13. Dickson was appointed deputy superintendent in June. She joined OSFI in 1999, and was assistant superintendent, regulation sector, from January 1, 2000, to June 2006.

In a letter to its regulated institutions, Dickson reports that she has been authorized by the Governor in Council to act as superintendent while the position is vacant. “This authorization ensures that the superintendent’s powers can be legally exercised in the interim,” it notes. “There should be no change in your dealings with OSFI.

The letter also notes that the process to identify and appoint a new superintendent is underway.
