Toronto police say a former bank employee faces fraud charges after 31 seniors had more than $200,000 taken from retirement accounts.

Police say the victims were clients of CIBC from across Canada.

Det.-Const. Niki Laxamana says nearly $206,000 was withdrawn from 43 accounts from March 2002 until the accused retired in August 2007.

It’s alleged the employee directed the funds into her own personal accounts and other accounts.

Police say several clients’ mailing addresses were changed to prevent the victims from receiving withdrawal notifications and bank statements through the mail.

Alicia Canlas, 59, of Toronto, appeared in court Tuesday on charges of fraud over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime. She was released on bail until her next appearance March 21.

Laxamana says the victims have been compensated by the bank, which was alerted by a client.
