There are many ways to decorate your work space, from a favourite photo to a kitschy bobblehead. But going overboard with knick-knacks can hurt your professional image.

“Your desk sends a message about how you work,” says Meredith Heron, principal of Toronto-based Meredith Heron Design. “[Your desk] gives an impression, it might not be actually truthful, but people will judge you by it.”

Here are some ways to keep your work space interesting without being tacky:

> Organize creatively
Add some spark to your work space by using funky but functional office supplies.

“Having really cool organizers or something that’s a little unconventional on your desk can add both a splash of character and functionality,” says Heron. For example, coloured boxes with lids are great for storing personal notes and files.

> Find unique items
Decorate your desk with one or two unusual items — it’s even better if they’re useful.

Heron uses the example of a large Fabergé egg she keeps on her desk, which she bought on a recent vacation. The egg is beautifully designed and opens up so she can store things inside.

“It’s useful,” she says of the egg. “You can actually hide something in it — like a little candy supply — but in no way does it read as ostentatious or childish.”

> Add some colour
Use brightly coloured fabric to cover up the more industrial aspects of your desk.

For one of her clients, Heron reupholstered all of the employees’ corkboards, alternating with four different patterns, to add a little punch as you walk past cubicles and offices.

> Use the company logo – sparingly
If you work in a very corporate environment use the company’s corporate design to add some colour — just don’t overdo it.

“You don’t want to look like a bumper sticker for your brand,” says Heron. However, using the company colours for office supplies and accessories can bring a little style to your space.

> Avoid clutter
Maintain a professional look by keeping your desk tidy and clean.

“If you have a lot of small things, your desk is going to look junky,” says Heron. While one or two items give a desk character, keeping your Beanie Babies collection nearby sends the wrong message.

Toys in general should be kept at home, not at the office, says Heron. Toys on your desk suggest that you’re bored and you need a distraction.

> Add some homey touches
Bring in items traditionally used in home décor to make your space more comfortable and inviting, Heron suggests.

Accenting your office with a lamp that’s traditionally used in a home adds a nice personal touch.
