The way people perceive your practice is dependent not only on what you say and do, but also on what you wear, according to Linda Allan, a Toronto-based certified management consultant who specializes in behaviours in business.
People have expectations when it comes to their financial advisors, Allan says. If you don’t portray the image of a professional who is committed to the serious task of providing financial advice, you may lose clients to an advisor who always looks the part.
Last-minute wardrobe emergencies can compromise your professional image. So, being prepared for sartorial mishaps can be a key aspect of building your business.
Here are four quick fixes for your office-attire emergencies:
> Keep “spares” handy
Every advisor should keep some clothing basics available in his or her office in case of a last-minute spill or tear.
Men, always have an extra tie that goes with most of your suits and shirts, Allan advises.
“That seems to be where you stain the most,” she says. “You go out for a lunch and where does [food] go? On your tie.”
Also, keep a spare jacket that goes with most of your office attire.
Women should have a spare pair of pantyhose to provide a polished look for evening events, Allan says.
And don’t forget the shoes, ladies. If you have ever lost a heel while walking over a grate, you know it’s a good idea to have a back-up pair on hand. “You can’t limp around,” Allan says, “and you can’t wear your little flip flops.”
Also, women should have an extra purse suitable for evening events. Business bags are too heavy for social functions, Allan says. A smaller purse that complements many outfits is a good accessory to stow in the office.
> Have a wardrobe “toolkit”
You can make quick repairs if you have the right tools on hand
A good shoe brush and polish can restore scuffed or muddied shoes to a presentable state. And a lint brush is a must. Clothes look much cleaner when they’re free of hair and fuzz.
And don’t forget the portable stain remover to help with those last-minute spots. The key is to blot out the stain with the remover as soon as you notice it. Avoid rubbing it in with a wet paper towel, which only makes things worse.
> Make friends with local clothing services
Your network of contacts should include a good dry cleaner and shoe repair shop located near the office. Become familiar with the people who provide these services so they know exactly where to go for a last-minute emergency, Allan says.
A dry cleaner will be able to handle last-minute fixes such as a loose pant hem or a button that has fallen off your jacket.
