The 2003 Advocis National Conference wrapped up in St. John’s, Nfld. Saturday afternoon after four days of educational sessions, association business, and Newfoundland hospitality, including the “Down Home Lobster Dinner” Friday night.

Saturday’s agenda included a “He Said/She Said” debate on politics between journalist Deirdre McMurdy and Maclean’s magazine editor Tony Wilson-Smith, and a talk from inspirational speaker Alvin Law.

“This is a different conference this year and I really like that — and having it in Newfoundland is great too,”said Diana Frizell, president of the Advocis Victoria chapter.

“There are choices that I’ve never had before, like seminars on advanced financial planning. I think the merger between CAIFA and CAFP has enhanced the content side of things,” she added.

“Tax expert Jamie Golombek’s talk on investment strategies and the “Canada at a Crossroads” panel discussion on the economy featuring Tom O’Neill, John Crispo, and Fred Ketchen were standouts for many attendees.

Advocis’ commitment to ongoing advocacy on regulatory issues was also a hot topic at the annual general meeting business session that took place on Friday. Chair Brian Mallard and president Steve Howard outlined their vision for the next six months that will include applying intense pressure at the political level to combat the unfair regulatory constraints currently levied at advisors.

The Advocis 2004 National Conference will take place May 26 to 29, 2004, in Calgary.
