Garry Duncan was appointed the new chairman of the FPSC board at the eighth annual meeting of the Financial Planners Standards Council held in Calgary on June 19.

Duncan is taking over from Michael Lem who becomes Past-Chair.

“As chairperson, I undertake to work with the Board and the FPSC staff to ensure the CFP will continue to be the designation of choice by those who wish to become financial planners and by those who wish to use financial planners,” Duncan said in his first remarks to the FPSC board as chair.

John Carpenter, a board member since 1996, stepped down from the past chair position and completed his service on the FPSC board. In January, Carpenter was appointed chair of Financial Planning Standards Board (FPSB), the international entity overseeing the global expansion of the CFP designation.

Cynthia Kett was recognized for her service as the CAFP representative on the FPSC Board from 2001 to 2003. CAFP’s merger with CAIFA in January resulted in one seat for the new organization, Advocis, thus eliminating the CAFP seat.

Ian Davidson from Assante Capital Management Ltd. was elected as a new director. All other existing Directors remain on the Board for 2003/2004.

FPSC also hosted a reception where more than 30 CFP professionals from Calgary who passed the CFP Examination in 2002 attended. This was the first time that the annual meeting was held outside of Toronto. The Board will hold its annual meeting in different regions across Canada to strengthen FPSC’s national presence.

The members of the FPSC’s 2003-2004 board are:
