Markets closed lower Monday in light trading as many market participants on both sides of the boarder appear to have taken the day off.
Toronto stocks closed lower with nine of the Toronto Stock Exchange S&P/TSX composite index’s 10 subgroups down. Overall, the S&P/TSX dropped 26.03 points, to 7441.15; the TSX Venture Exchange fell 12.76 points to 1271.72. Overall the materials group slipped 0.98% with gold issues down 1.15%. Tech issues and health care also fell 0.73% and 0.69%, respectively.
Market volume in Toronto was 210.3 million shares, worth $1.85 billion.
Trading was light on the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 31.23 points to 9317.64, the Nasdaq composite index slipped 1.01 points to 1764.31, and the S&P 500 Index closed slightly higher, up 0.65 points to 993.71.
