Leslie Nielsen and Catriona LeMay Doan headlined this year’s sold out Drive For Life Charity Golf Tournament sponsored by Transamerica Life Canada. The event, held Tuesday, is now in its seventh year, and recently passed the $1million mark in funds raised.

Nielson, now 77, on hand as the March of Dimes spokesperson, donated his time and entertained the gathering well into the evening. Canadian Olympic speed skating champion, LeMay Doan is the spokesperson the Transamerica’s corporate charitable gifting program.

At a banquet following the tournament, George Foegele, Chairman, President and CEO of Transamerica Life Canada and AEGON Canada, presented a cheque for $286,500, representing the full proceeds of this year’s event, to Andria Spindel, president and CEO of Ontario March of Dimes.

Spindel says the funds will be used to support the Conductive Education Program, designed to help children and adults with physical disabilities lead more independent, rewarding and self-sufficient lives.

In August 2002 Transamerica pledged to raise $700,000 over three years for the program. The charity says the three-year pledge represents largest single corporate gift in its 51-year history.
