Dynamic Mutual Funds Ltd. says that beginning next year the Dynamic Power Funds will be able to use selective short selling as an investment tool.

Short selling is used by high-net-worth investors and large institutions to control volatility while potentially enhancing investment performance.

“We asked our investors as well as mutual fund regulators for approval to add this valuable investment tool to our management, and both approved. We are confident that this enhancement will lead to more effective management and better long-term performance,” said David Goodman, president and CEO of Dynamic, in a news release.

“Dynamic aims to distinguish itself not only through top-notch portfolio management, but also through creative investment solutions and value added innovations like this one,” said Goodman, “We are very proud to be the first investment company to bring this advantage to a core group of mutual funds.”

Short selling will be implemented within tight parameters, to ensure that any risk is well controlled. The short position of each fund will be kept under 10% of the net assets of the fund, and there will be stringent rules pertaining to concentration, cash-cover, and stop-loss. The Dynamic Power Funds will continue to focus primarily on generating growth through a traditional “long” investment strategy, adding short selling in a controlled and selective way.

“This flexible strategy can enhance returns during strong markets and provide a defensive posture in volatile or declining markets.” says Noah Blackstein, VP and lead portfolio manager of several Dynamic Power Funds.

Full details of the short selling strategy will be included in Dynamic’s prospectus renewal this December. Existing investors will receive details of the enhancement following the filing of the renewed prospectus. The funds are expected to be in a position to implement the ability to short by February 2004.

The funds affected include the Dynamic Power Canadian Growth Fund, Dynamic Power Canadian Growth Class, Dynamic Power American Growth Fund, Dynamic Power American Growth Class, Dynamic Power Balanced Fund, and the Dynamic Power Global Growth Class (formerly named Dynamic Power International Growth Class). The Dynamic Power Funds have over $1.5 billion in assets under management.
