Michael Lee-Chin, the CEO of mutual fund firm AIC Ltd., has donated $10 million for a new leadership school at the University of Toronto’s school of business.

The gift — one of the largest the university has received — has boosted its six-year drive over its $1 billion goal, making it the largest fundraising campaign in Canadian history.

The U of T’s Joseph L. Rotman School of Management will use Lee-Chin’s gift to create the AIC Institute of Leadership.

It is the latest in a string of donations Lee-Chin has made to public institutions in Ontario. Previous gifts include a $30 million donation for the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, a $5 million donation to McMaster University in Hamilton, and a $1 million gift for a cancer clinic in Burlington.

He urges other business leaders to follow his example.”True leaders at the helm of today’s global organizations need to integrate social citizenship into their vision,” he said yesterday in a teleconference from Calgary. “It’s important for business to give back to society.”

Lee-Chin was born in Jamaica in 1951 and came to Canada at 19 to study civil engineering at McMaster University.
