Dean Owen has been elected as the 2012 chairman of the board of directors for Advocis, The Financial Advisors Association of Canada, the association announced on Monday.
A new slate of directors was elected on Nov. 21 at the association’s annual general meeting.
“It is a tremendous honour for me to have the support and confidence of the Advocis membership,” Owen said in a statement. “I have been a member of this organization for almost my entire professional life, and I know the important role it plays in the lives of all financial advisors and planners in Canada. My board colleagues and I look forward to addressing the challenges that face our profession, to the many exciting opportunities, and to ensuring that Advocis remains a vibrant and effective voice for our members.”
Owen has served as a director of Advocis at both the national and local levels for 20 years, including a term as president of the Saskatoon chapter in 1997. At the national level he has served both as treasurer and vice chairman, and has also sat as a trustee on the Institute Board of Trustees. He served on the Life Insurance Council of Saskatchewan from 2000 to 2008, including a term as chair.
Owen obtained his bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1990, his CLU designation in 1999, and his CH.F.C. designation in 2000. He joined Saskatoon-based Cherry Financial Services in 1998 and practices in the area of insurance, retirement, and estate planning.
He is heavily involved in charity work, and is also the assistant coach of the University of Saskatchewan women’s hockey team.
