Chile will host the 19th International Conference of Banking Supervisors in 2016, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision announced Friday.

The conference, which has been held every two years since 1979, aims to foster discussion of key supervisory issues and co-operation in the oversight of international banks.

The meeting involves senior supervisors and central bankers from more than 100 countries along with representatives of international financial institutions, which enables broad-based discussion on critical issues to banking regulators in advanced and emerging market jurisdictions.

“This is a significant undertaking on the part of the Chilean authorities. It is a reflection of their commitment to be an active participant on the Basel Committee and to continue their adoption of global regulatory standards,” said Stefan Ingves, chairman of the Basel Committee and governor of Sveriges Riksbank.

Chile joined the Basel Committee in 2014 as an observer.
