National Bank of Canad will be a major backer of tennis in Quebec, reaching a five-year agreement to be the presenting sponsor of the Rogers Cup men’s and women’s championships in Montreal.

In a deal with Tennis Canada announced Monday, National Bank said it will also sponsor a full slate of events in and around Montreal to encourage young players to excel in the sport.

Total value of the sponsorship was not announced. But beginning this fall of 2005 and for the remainder of the five-year agreement, the bank said it will also sponsor six new regional tournaments, with annual prize money of US$10,000 to US$25,000. It will also award $50,000 in bursaries to young Quebec athletes each year. The bank will also be involved in provincial tours and municipal programs.

“National Bank is very pleased to be associated with this major event which continues to gain in popularity and build a loyal following,” said Réal Raymond, National Bank president and CEO. “This alliance gives us an opportunity to promote tennis throughout Quebec.”
