The Canada Revenue Agency today reminded Canadians that they have until midnight on Monday, May 2 to file their 2004 income tax returns.

“As April 30 falls on a Saturday this year, Canadians will have an extra working day to file their returns,” said John McCallum, Minister of National Revenue, in a release.

Many CRA offices will accept income tax returns until midnight on May 2. As well, many post office outlets will also be open until midnight on May 2.

Tax returns received or postmarked by midnight on May 2 will be considered filed on time. Late-filing penalties and interest on amounts owing will apply to returns received or postmarked after this date.

McCallum indicated that of the close to 12.9 million returns received to date, more than 7.3 million people used NETFILE and/or EFILE to electronically transmit their income tax return. This is an increase of almost 5% over last year. “More and more Canadians are discovering that electronic filing is the fastest and easiest way to file their returns,” said the McCallum.

The CRA has extended its hours for general and business enquiries. Until May 1, 2005 inclusive, clients with general enquiries can call 1-800-959-8281 (English) between 8:15 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, and between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
