Toronto police are warning about the latest twist in scams involving perpetrators posing as Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) agents and seeking payment in iTunes gift cards.

Police say that they have been receiving “numerous complaints of an ongoing Canada Revenue Agency scam involving Apple iTunes gift cards.”

“The CRA will not ask for overdue tax payments to be made by Apple iTunes gift cards,” the warning says. “As well, the CRA will not request the access/PIN code for any iTunes cards purchased.”

The warning adds: “The CRA will not be sending police officers in less than an hour to arrest individuals for immediate non-payments.”

Police remind taxpayers to be cautious when contacted by someone claiming to be an agent for the CRA, to verify their identity and to call police to report attempted fraud.
