The Canadian Association of Financial and Insurance Advisors will convene in Ottawa this weekend for its 2002 National Conference and annual general meeting. First up on the agenda will be the decision to merge with the Canadian Association of Financial Planners to form a new professional association.

The CAFP will hold a special morning meeting on Saturday, Sept. 28 followed by the CAIFA AGM in the afternoon. The results of both meetings will determine whether the two associations will merge to form a new entity in January 2003. The results will be announced following CAIFA’s AGM.

CAIFA’s national conference kicks off on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at 08:30 EST. The three days of professional development seminars include:

  • Canada’s Health Care Dilemma: Can we Create the Proper Vision?: A panel discussion, including U.N. envoy Stephen Lewis and Michael Decter from the Canadian Institute of Health, on Canada’s health care system and how changes could affect financial advisors and their clients.
  • a session with Dr. Sherry Cooper on the macro-economic issues facing Canadians today.
  • a talk by Ray Griffin, chair of the International Council of Certified Financial Planners, providing an international perspective on the global financial services industry.
