The Ontario Ministry of Finance Monday appointed former Bank of Canada governor David Dodge to advise the provincial government on its economic and fiscal challenges.
Dodge was named the H. Ian Macdonald visiting economist, an honour named after Ontario’s first chief economist. The post’s mandate is to “provide objective advice to the ministry on emerging economic challenges and opportunities and to contribute to economic and fiscal policy development.”
From 2005 to 2007, the post was held by former Bank of Montreal chief economist, Tim O’Neill, who recently advised B.C.’s government on its latest budget.
Dodge is currently chancellor of Queen’s University and a senior advisor at the law firm Bennett Jones LLP. He was governor of the Bank of Canada from 2001 to 2008. He has also served as deputy minister to the federal departments of Finance and Health. Dodge also co-chairs the global market monitoring group of the global bank lobby group, the International Institute of Finance (IIF), and the C.D. Howe Institute’s national advisory council.
