Kevin Page has been appointed Canada’s first parliamentary budget officer, the leader of the government of the House of Commons announced today.

The creation of the position was a part of the Conservative platform during the last election.

“As promised in the Federal Accountability Act, the Parliamentary Budget Officer will provide independent analysis to Canadians on the state of the nation’s finances,” said Minister Van Loan, who is also the minister for democratic reform. “With his expertise in economics, Mr. Page is a fine choice to fill this position.”

Page is currently special advisor for human resources and social development Canada, a position he has held since October of last year. Page has worked for the federal government for more than 25 years and has served in various capacities in the fiscal expenditure field, most recently with the Privy Council Office, the Treasury Board, and the Department of Finance. He began his career as an economist at Finance Canada in 1981.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer is an independent officer of the Library of Parliament who reports to the Speakers of both chambers. The position was created through amendments to the Parliament of Canada Act contained in the Federal Accountability Act.

Page’s appointment is effective as of March 25.
