With a final score of 298 – 275, the longest hockey game in history came to a close at Montreal’s Bell Centre at 1:35 am Wednesday morning. The game, hosted by CIBC Wood Gundy, was a three-day effort to raise money for the Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada and Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation.
Forty amateur hockey players – many from the financial services industry – took turns in the 54-hour match, rotating in 50-minute shifts; medical staff were on hand to ensure players were sufficiently hydrated. Aside from a couple minor injuries, there were no medical emergencies.
Patrick Lefrancois, V.P. of Sales and a player in the game, says that donations are still being calculated, but he expects the $100,000 target will be met.
The next step is making it official. The current record for the longest hockey game is held by a team in British Columbia, who set the record at 52 hours last August. A log book of witnesses and a videotaped account of the game will be sent to England in the upcoming weeks, where the Guinness Book of World Records will review it.
