Foreign investors continued to buy a “significant” amount of Canadian bonds in August, while Canadians invested moderately in foreign equities.

Statistics Canada reports non-residents purchased $11.1 billion of Canadian securities, with the majority of the investment going to corporate and government business enterprise bonds.

Meanwhile, the agency says Canadians acquired $3.4 billion of foreign securities, led by foreign stocks.

Non-residents invested $10.8 billion in Canadian bonds.

But non-residents reduced their holdings of Canadian money market instruments by $705 million in August.

Non-residents acquired $995 million of Canadian stocks.

Canadian investors added $2.5 billion of foreign stocks to their portfolios in August, three-quarters of it in U.S. stocks.

Canadians also acquired $1 billion in foreign money market instruments, mainly U.S. Treasury bills.
